By Janet Peterson

Enterprise Resource Planning Software Leadership

Enterprise resource planning software giant SAP has been designated the worldwide market share leader in the combined software categories of enterprise resource planning (ERP), supply chain management (SCM) and customer relationship management (CRM) software by research and analyst firm Gartner. The three SAP business software systems of SAP ERP, SAP SCM and SAP CRM are all part of the SAP Business Suite.

The Gartner ERP global software industry advisory tabulates enterprise software revenues as the basis to project SAP as the leader the Enterprise Resource Planning software market with a total worldwide market share of 27 percent. This measurement overtakes direct competitor Oracle by 13.8 percent of worldwide ERP software market share. SAP is also named a leader in multiple ERP segment categories including accounting/financials and human capital management systems. Similarly, the research report indicates that SAP is the SCM market share leader as measured by total SCM software revenues and has massed a total market share of 19.7 percent, surpassing Oracle which stands at 14.9 percent market share.

Customer Relationship Management Software Not So Clear

While often seemingly contradictory with other research and analyst reports, the Gartner rankings measure CRM software revenues to show SAP leading the Customer Relationship Management software market with a market share of 25.7 percent, a full ten percentage points ahead of rival Oracle. However, in the continuous flux to message analyst quotes and market measurements, Oracle cites the following research:

  • IDC reports that Oracle's Siebel CRM is the leading market share CRM software in the categories of sales force automation (SFA), marketing and customer service. As measured in the transactional CRM software market, Oracle was rated the number 1 vendor with a 15.6% market share. IDC emphasized that Oracle's stronghold is in Sales Force Automation where the software giant holds the number one position with $587M revenues and 17.9% market share.
  • Datamonitor also named Oracle CRM the decisive market share leader in the CRM software market. According to research firm Datamonitor, Decision Matrix, "Oracle's CRM products, and particularly Oracle Siebel CRM, are among the leading solutions in almost every aspect of CRM technology, comprehensively outpacing all other competitors."
  • In Gartner's 2007 CRM vendor rankings, the analyst firm places Oracle Siebel CRM in the Magic Quadrant's for Multi-channel Marketing Campaign Management, CRM Customer Service Contact Centers, Customer Data Integration Hubs, Field Service Management and Sales Force Automation (SFA).
